How can I start my own fashion line in a way that would require the least initial investment?

Your brand image is going to be the most important thing in the beginning.

If you are really start from scratch, here are steps to take:

  1. Find your target market guys or girls? hipster, classy, skater, etc.?
  2. Research your competition Find what is trending currently and how you can either disrupt their ideas with something new, or fit in with better pricing, quality, etc. It is also important to see what kind of material they are using.
  3. The Material you use is equally as important as the design.
  4. Sketch your designs You can also hire someone to do this. My recommendation would be to find the nearest art school and either find someone with the same vision as you to join your company, or just pay someone. You’d be surprised how many college kids are looking to make money with their skills. Plus you get to help them build their portfolio.
  5. Create a website Your digital presence is incredibly important as a startup fashion brand. Create a stunning instagram account and even start a blog detailing your journey in starting the brand. This will help with SEO as well. If you’ve gotten this far, it will absolutely be a good idea to incorporate your company as an official LLC. or Corporation. I’d recommend going for an LLC. since it will offer you the protection you need, and is really the most simple.
  6. Contact suppliers
First source your materials. Then coordinate with a tailor (or ideally a textile mill) to have your fabrics and designs sent to them.

Again your brand is everything. This is also probably where you will spend a majority of your money, so don’t try to cut corners! Host parties, hire beautiful people, and seriously keep your social media on point. Fashion brands are definitely one of the most difficult businesses because there is little guarantee of success. Do your best to leverage your existing network, and put a tremendous amount of energy into expanding that network by attending as many fashion related events as you possible can.
